Working with the System

Setting Goals

Setting goals for your child's education is perhaps one of the most important pieces of developing an education plan.  Generally members of the CST will present you with goals based on the child's evaluation and eligibility criteria, however you can contribute too!

Goals should be S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound).  Avoid broad statements and instead focus on behavior that you can count or observe.  In the meeting, ask "How will you know if my child is achieving these goals?"

For more information on goals click here.

Report Cards

OPS provides report cards and IEP progress reports to parents through the school's Parent Portal. To access your child's IEP progress report(s), log in to the Parent Portal and select the "G&O Progress" option (under "Grades"). You will be prompted to acknowledge electronic receipt of the report by the system.

If you do not have computer or internet access, please contact the Special Services office for a printed copy of your child's report. If you need assistance using the Parent Portal, please contact the school's Main Office.

Teacher Conferences

Conference days don’t just offer parents the opportunity to speak with homeroom teachers. During these days and times, parents may also meet with other OPS faculty/staff members who work with students. Below is a summary:

  • Special area teachers (e.g., art, music, world language, gym, etc.), Basic Skills, ESL, and Academically Talented teachers are in their classrooms during conference times. These folks are a good resource for learning how your child is doing in less structured settings.

  • Teachers from the Language Learning Disabilities (LLD) classrooms and Resource Rooms will either try to attend the conference with the homeroom teacher or arrange additional conference times. Reach out to these teachers to ensure that you get to hear from them.

  • Speech language pathologists are on site during conferences to answer questions from parents.

  • The Child Study Team members and the school counselor are in their offices and available to speak to parents during conference times as well.  * Note: Region V employees (Physical Therapy, Behaviorist etc...) are not available during conferences.

A list of teacher and staff room numbers can be found on the OPS website.
